Utah Group Health Insurance
There are many options for Utah employers to provide health insurance to their employees. However, there are some things you should know before you apply:
How Group Health Insurance Works in Utah
Each insurance company establishes and publishes "street rates" or "base rates." These are starting rates. Once your group applies for health insurance, the insurance company underwrites your group's applications. There are typically one of three outcomes to this process.
- Your group is approved at the "street rates"
- Your group is approved at a modified, or increased rate (based on the groups collective health history) (In Utah, an insurer can raise the rates up to 85% higher than their published street, or base rate.)
- Your group is denied because they haven't met the company's application requirements (in Utah, a group cannot be denied solely on the basis of health history, or health conditions).
Most Utah groups that apply will experience some type of rate increase according to the collective health history of its employees.
If approved, you will be presented an offer for the plan you applied for. The insurance company, or your agent, will present the rates to you, which you can then accept or decline.

Which Company is Best for My Employees?
Each company has something different to offer. It's important to consider the network of doctors and hospitals you want to have access to, but there are many things that play a role in which company is best for your group.
- Do you have 10-99 employees? If so, Humana & Aetna is the best place to start.
- Are you a husband and wife looking to start a group plan? If so, Aetna is probably the only group option in the Utah market. If you have at least one W-2 employee, Humana may also be an option.
- Are you looking to cover employees only, but not their families? Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield of Utah and Altius are good companies to start with.
- Do you have a very health group of employees? If so, SelectHealth or Humana may have the best rates for your group.
- Are most of your employees younger, rather than more mature? If so, Altius may have more favorable rates for your group.
- Does your group have an average amount of health issues? If so, Blue Cross of Utah and Altius may come in with favorable rates in the end.
- Do some of your employees have serious health conditions? If so, SelectHealth or Humana may come back with the best rates in the end.
Doctor & Hospital Networks
First, make sure the company you apply for has the network of doctors and hospitals that is best for you and your employees. Here are the networks that each company uses:
- Altius Health Plans, Assurant Health, HumanaOne, and Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield of Utah use an independent doctor network and primarily use the HCA/Mountain Star hospital network.
- SelectHealth and United Healthcare primarily use the Intermountain Healthcare network and doctors.
Blue Cross also allows excellent in network benefits for the Intermountain Healthcare network, but you have to be on the right plan.
